I did a thing…
I signed up for NaNoWriMo this year. Gods help me!
For those unfamiliar with the acronym, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and it’s where you write an entire novel (50,000 words) in the month of November. Egads!
I first began NaNo back in 2011. I was fairly wet behind the ears and I only managed to “win” by shear determination – which is how I succeed at most things in my life. I started and finished my first novel that year (okay I did finish a novel before this, but it was fairly crappy so we don’t speak of it.)
The novel, titled Woven, was a historical fiction taking place in the same house in England over 400 years. I love that novel, though I haven’t really touched it since. It needs work – lots of work – but it holds a very special place in my heart.
I participated in 2012 and 2013 (completing NaNo in 2013) and I did write another novel in 2014 for JuNoWriMo (similar challenge but takes place in June) but since then I’ve spent the last two years working on edits. Which sounds uber productive but actually it’s more like me flailing around unsure of what the hell I’m doing.
Earlier this year I began querying agents, only to realize I’m not ready yet. My novel isn’t ready yet. I’m not sure when it will be ready – if ever – but let’s not dig into that right now because …NANO!
This year has been more chaotic than I’d like to admit and because of this my writing has really, really, REALLY suffered. Think Kermit flails and you’ll have a glimpse into my life. I should finish editing and I should finish my urban fantasy series but fuck it, I’m not. I need a break from nearly five years of writing that series. I need to write something else. Period.
So this year when NaNo started to creep up on me, I debated rewriting book 2 or working on book 4, but neither of those felt right. So screw it.
New novel. New genre. New everything.
I have NO IDEA what this novel is about. These two characters just kind of showed up in my brain the other day, so I’m going to let them have a say. It’s tentatively called Clara and Benny because those are their names and I’m not good at titles. It’s shaping up to be a YA (young adult) novel that may or may not have a fantastical spin. Guess I’ll find that out while writing.
I seem to write better when I’m participating in a challenge so I’m hoping this will give me the kick in the pants I need. Gods know I need SOMETHING to get me out of this funk.
If you’re interested in joining NaNoWriMo or if you’re already there, you can find me under the name WriteMeHappy. I’ll be the one hyped up on caffeine and talking nonsensical until December. 😉
