Journaling: Letting Creativity Flow

Every morning I write in my journal. It’s a habit I developed after reading the book The Artist’s Way (if you haven’t read it, you really should!). It’s here among the pages of me complaining about the weather or how early mornings suck, that an idea will pop up. One that is usually pretty great. 🙂

A few weeks ago while I was journaling, one of those great ideas unfurled itself onto the page. A question that came seemingly out of nowhere:

What if I created art based on the characters in my novels?

Suddenly colours and images flashed through my mind. I got excited. REALLY excited because it’s the first time I’ve wanted to create art in YEARS.

And that’s when I realized–or rather re-realized–just how important those morning pages are to me. Sure, a lot of what I write is nonsense–to do lists, grumbles about daily life, etc.–but sometimes it’s exactly what I need to let my creativity flow unhindered. If I have to write umpteen pages just for one creative spark, I’ll do it. Because it’s totally worth it.

Now I bet you’re curious about these new art pieces 😉 Well sadly you’ll have to wait! Since I’m neck deep in publishing I’ve written all the inspiration down and will pick up my paintbrushes this summer. Stay tuned.
